February 8~ First Opera in North America

On February 8, 1735, a ballad opera called “Flora” premiered in Charleston, South Carolina, in a makeshift theatre — going down in recorded history as the first opera of any kind to be produced in North America.

On February 8, 1895 a new four-act production of “Swan Lake”, with choreography by Lev Ivanov and Marius Petipa, premiered  in St Petersburg. This 1895 revival of Swan Lake has served as the basis for nearly every production since.
