Double Canon, for string quartet (“Raoul Dufy in Memoriam”) by Igor Stravinsky

“Strawinsky never once met the painter during his lifetime: whether his bright style which overflowed with light spoke to Strawinsky in particular can only be conjectured. Stravinsky dedicated “the Double Canon in memoriam Dufy” later on for no obvious reason that can be found in the literature.”

Job: A Masque for Dancing (one act ballet) by Ralph Vaughan Williams

“The ballet is based on the Book of Job from the Hebrew Bible and was inspired by the illustrated edition by William Blake, published in 1826. Job had its world premiere on July 5, 1931, and was performed for members of the Camargo Society at the Cambridge Theatre, London. The first public performance of the ballet took place on September 22, 1931 at the Old Vic Theatre.” ~Wikipedia

Goyescas, Op. 11: V. Love and Death – ballade by Enrique Granados

“The title comes from Goya’s Caprichos, and according to Granados: ‘All of the themes of Goyescas are united in El amor y la muerte… intense pain, nostalgic love and the final tragedy – death. The middle section is based on the themes of Quejas o la maja y el ruiseñor and Los requiebros, converting the drama into sweet gentle sorrow…the final chords represent the renunciation of happiness.’”
